Five Things to Consider When Seeking the Best Memory Support Program

When looking for a memory support community that meets the needs of your loved one who is living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other memory loss, the best possible place for them to be is in a community where they will have the proper support and care necessary to maintain a high quality of life even as their cognitive issues progress.

Research has shown that residents in memory support communities experience a multitude of benefits. They generally take less medication, have a reduced risk of falls and injuries, have improved wellness and nutrition, enjoy more independence and socialization, and visit the hospital less often.

Here are five important factors to consider when searching for the right memory support community and program for your loved one:

1. Staffing

It’s important to ask yourself whether the team in the community you’re evaluating appears to be knowledgeable and caring. Find out their level of training and experience and whether any team members are certified dementia care managers. Another important factor to consider is the staff-to-resident ratio, both during the day and at night. At communities like Jackson Creek Senior Living, team members are trained in compassionate, person-centered care and on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

2. Safety

Six out of 10 people living with Alzheimer’s have the tendency to wander, so it’s a good idea to find out if the memory support community you’re considering has safeguards and electronic safety features against residents leaving the premises. Some communities are equipped with a wander alert system, while others implement access-controlled, video-monitored entry or emergency call systems and pendants in resident apartments.

3. Services

Think about what level of care your loved one needs, from basic services like meal prep and laundry to specialized medical care and assistance with activities of daily living. Find out a community’s standard procedures for medical emergencies, especially if your loved one has underlying conditions. You may also want to ask what kinds of therapies the community offers, such as pet, music, reminiscence, light, art, or another type of specialized therapy.

4. Levels of Care

Other important information to gather is whether the community’s Health and Wellness Director and memory support team develop an individual care plan for residents upon moving in, and how residents are engaged by team members with verbal queues and prompting. If necessary, ask whether the community can care for residents who exhibit disruptive behavior. If your loved one is not quite ready for memory support, you can also ask whether they have an assisted living to Alzheimer’s support bridge program for early-stage residents.

5. Amenities

Finally, determine what the living arrangements are in the community you are considering: are there memory support neighborhoods? Are the apartments arranged around shared common areas like a homelike living room or dedicated activities space? At Jackson Creek, we offer a memory support dining program and two outdoor courtyards to encourage movement and fresh air. Other services include wellness and life enrichment programs, chef-prepared meals, housekeeping and laundry services, and scheduled transportation.

Before deciding, determine your loved one’s personal needs and then evaluate the memory support program and community as much as possible: schedule a tour, read online reviews, talk to residents, families, and team members, and most importantly, ask questions!

At Jackson Creek Senior Living, we help families find the best living situation to meet their loved one’s needs. Call  719-259-1331 or visit jacksoncreekseniorliving.com if you have questions about memory support or would like to schedule a personalized tour.

About Jackson Creek Senior Living
Located at 16601 Jackson Creek Parkway, Jackson Creek Senior Living is a Colorado-based retirement community offering independent and assisted living, memory support, respite care, and a day retreat program for seniors aged 62-plus. The community is managed by WellAge Senior Living, a respected senior care management company.

Do you or a loved one need help with activities of daily living as you age? Does a spouse or friend need help because their memory is declining? When you begin your search for long-term care for an aging loved one, knowing the difference between assisted living and memory support is important. While some of the services are the same, there are several differences in the level of care provided.

What Does Assisted Living Mean?

Seniors in an assisted living community typically need help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, incontinence management, medication management, and mobility. While they require help with some of these tasks their reasoning skills are still intact, and they can communicate their needs.

What Does Memory Support Mean?

Memory support residents also require assistance with activities of daily living but to a higher and more personalized level. Seniors experiencing memory loss may forget how to turn off a faucet or burner, or even how to navigate to and from their apartment. They often cannot clearly articulate their needs which can lead to frustration. Memory support team members have special training to enhance engagement and communication with residents so they can be successful and still maintain purpose in a community.

Safety

Safety is always a concern for seniors who are prone to falls and other injuries. In assisted living, residents have call buttons in their apartments and daily check-ins to ensure they are generally in good health. Some residents may have pendants for emergency help as needed.

Residents in memory support need more personalized and enhanced security services to keep them from wandering from the community, which typically includes keypad access for team members and visitors to enter and leave the memory support neighborhood. Memory support communities are often designed to minimize confusion with plenty of open space for walking and movement, color-coded walls and personalized shadow boxes to help residents navigate the building, and lots of signage.

Socialization and Activities

Assisted living communities offer lots of fun activities and opportunities for residents to socialize and engage like painting, playing board games, going to live musical performances, daily exercise, and educational forums.

Memory support residents have access to most of the same socialization opportunities, but with more personalization to ensure they are meaningful and purposeful. Special activities may be scheduled for these residents that have been shown to help slow cognitive decline, reduce falls, and decrease the use of some medications, and are done with the support of trained team members.

At Jackson Creek Senior Living, we help families find the best living situation to meet their loved one’s needs. Call 719-259-1331 or visit jacksoncreekseniorliving.com if you have questions about assisted living or memory support or would like to schedule a personalized tour.

Tailoring Activities and Amenities for Men in Senior Living Can Yield Positive Results

Visit most senior living communities, and you will see plenty of women. Some industry estimates suggest the gender ratio in senior living is 70% female to 30% male. Experts document several reasons for the disparity, including women tend to live longer, men often foster self-sufficiency and tend to live alone longer, and, sometimes, they just aren’t comfortable that 90% of the staff in senior living is female.

But some senior living communities, such as Jackson Creek Senior Living in Monument, Colorado, are making a concerted effort to make men comfortable choosing senior living, and it’s paying off. To foster a welcoming environment for men at Jackson Creek, the community incorporated many amenities and activities geared to making men more comfortable, and the community has tapped into the extensive local veteran population to let them know they are respected and welcome at the veteran-proud community.

Amenities Catered to Male Interests

When developing Jackson Creek, owners focused on creating a facility and environment that catered to all genders. Several of the amenities incorporated at Jackson Creek specifically geared to appeal to men in senior living include:

  • Raised gardening beds: Tending to plants provides a sense of accomplishment and purpose.
  • Outdoor putting green: Golf enthusiasts can practice their putting skills and enjoy a recreational activity they love within the community.
  • Exercise and therapy spaces: With a wide range of equipment, male residents can maintain physical health or recover from any ailment or injury.
  • Theater: Watching sports events or classic movies on the big screen provides entertainment and a sense of community during screenings.
  • Library: Men who enjoy reading or engaging in intellectual pursuits find solace and enrichment in a well-stocked library.
  • Game room: Activities like cards or other games offer a social outlet while fostering friendly competition.
  • Basic cable with 140 channels/Wi-Fi: Access to entertainment through TV and Wi-Fi for those who enjoy staying updated on current events or indulging in their favorite shows.

Activities That Create Connections for Men in Senior Living

  • Veterans Appreciation Activities: Jackson Creek is just miles from Colorado Springs and home to several military installations, including Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, and the prestigious United States Air Force Academy. Hosting events for veterans has made many of the community’s veterans feel at home.
  • Car Shows & Automobile Exhibitions: Yearly, the community hosts events that showcase classic cars for resident auto enthusiasts.
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Talks: Discussions to connect veterans create understanding and support.
  • Adventurous Initiatives like Dream Flights: Thrilling airborne adventures for those seeking unique experiences.
  • Sports Discussions and Competitions: From cornhole to bingo nights and even Wii tournaments, Jackson Creek offers an array of competitive games.
  • Ice Cream Socials: Regular events, especially when welcoming new residents, help create fast friendships.

Create Lasting Connections

These amenities and activities geared to men in senior living serve as catalysts for forging new friendships among our male residents. It’s about going beyond just passing time—we want to create avenues for genuine connections, shared enjoyment, and mutual support.

For families seeking communities that prioritize their male family members’ interests, communities offering a range of activities and groups tailored for men can be invaluable. By embracing a multifaceted approach to engagement and fun, communities ensure that every male resident feels celebrated and valued for their unique interests.

Celebrating 5 Years of Integrity at Jackson Creek Senior Living Community

For Jackson Creek Senior Living in Monument, Colo., the past five years have been a journey of growth, resilience, and commitment to providing the best senior living experience for residents. As we celebrate our five-year anniversary, it’s a perfect time to reflect on our history, the values that have remained unchanged, the challenges we’ve overcome, and our vision for the future.

Building a Foundation

Over the years, the mission and core values of Jackson Creek haven’t changed. The most significant? Integrity.

“We’re not here just to fill rooms; we’re here to ensure every resident feels confident and informed about their decision to join our community,” shares Laura Hale, Director of Sales and Marketing.

Adapting to the Challenges of COVID-19

While the world outside was filled with uncertainty, Jackson Creek remained a safe and supportive community during the challenging pandemic era, which fell during the community’s first five years. The community responded by creating its very own TV channel during a lockdown—talented residents, from painters to performers, recorded content broadcast in each resident’s room. For special events, like the Air Force celebration, their recognition reached every corner of the community with a special appearance of trumpets and decorated cupcakes delivered a la carte.

Recognizing the needs of all of its community’s residents during the pandemic, Jackson Creek’s culinary team went above and beyond to deliver three nutritious meals to every resident, so grocery shopping wasn’t an issue. All of this was done without raising rental rates, reflecting the commitment to standing with residents and families during challenging times.

Representing the Heart of Monument

Laura went on to share how the common phrase within the community is to “be the heart of Monument.” By actively participating in local events like the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, Kiwanis’ Empty Bowl Dinner, and volunteering at Tri-Lakes women’s events, they’ve given back and have integrated themselves into Monument’s close-knit community. The community, now that the pandemic has waned, hosts a number of educational and entertaining presentations that are often free and open to the public. Jackson Creek opened with a vision of being a resource for families and seniors, and that vision is fulfilled with its effort to provide these monthly events.

A Welcoming Environment

At Jackson Creek, relationships are built around the dining room table. It’s where residents, team members, and visitors come together to share stories and laughter. And more than just food, this time together fulfills socialization opportunities that help residents stay engaged and healthy.

“We are so proud of the strong roots we’ve established in the community. Our directors and team members work together to create an environment where everyone supports one another,” emphasized Laura. She shared how she feels truly blessed with their dedicated team members who all share a deep desire to work together for the benefit of the residents.

A Vision for the Future

As a WellAge Senior Living-managed community, Vice President of Operations Elizabeth Girling has played a key role in shaping the culture and values of Jackson Creek. Staff have recognized her commitment to excellence and building a team that is genuinely passionate about seniors. The goal is to connect with every person who walks through the doors and to get to know their individual stories.

The leadership team envisions Jackson Creek as the hub for senior living in Monument. With the housing market set to grow exponentially, the community plans to stay focused on supporting residents and continue to provide exceptional services so they can meet the growing demand for senior living in the Tri-Lakes region.

Their shared vision has since become a reality.

Tips for Holiday Celebrations With Loved Ones Living with Dementia

For many people, the holiday season is a joyful time when loved ones gather to celebrate together. It can be a time of sharing, reconnecting, and often larger groups—and sometimes commotion. However, for families affected by dementia, this time of year can be particularly challenging. It’s essential to adapt your holiday celebrations so they’re enjoyable and comfortable for all. Below, we offer you a few tips to create a festive and inclusive atmosphere for everyone during the holidays.

Create a Festive yet Calm Space

Decorating your home for the holidays is a cherished tradition for most, but for those living with dementia, decorations can be overwhelming and sometimes confusing. Here are a few ideas for creating a calm and comfortable environment.

  • Get Your Loved One Involved: Include your family member with dementia in the decorating process as it might bring back fond memories. Keep decorations simple and avoid overwhelming displays.
  • Safety First: Be mindful of potential safety hazards. Avoid burning candles and fragile decorations that can easily be reached.
  • Soothing Sounds: Play familiar holiday music at a relaxing volume to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Ask your loved ones which songs they enjoy most.

Adapt Your Holiday Activities

To ensure an enjoyable holiday season, consider adapting your usual holiday activities to meet your loved one’s needs.

  • Prepare Together: Engage in activities like decorating cookies, opening holiday cards, or creating simple decorations. Focus on the process and be mindful of every moment.
  • Small Gatherings: Host intimate gatherings to maintain a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.
  • Timing Matters: Plan holiday events at the best time of day for your loved one as keeping their daily routines intact is very helpful.
  • Quiet Spaces: If hosting guests, provide a quiet area for your loved one to retreat to when needed. Consider one-on-one visits instead of larger groups.
  • Meaningful Activities: Engage in meaningful activities like reading a favorite holiday story, reminiscing over photo albums, or watching their favorite holiday movies.
  • Short Outings: Keep outings brief, whether attending a gathering or going shopping. Plan for rest breaks if necessary.

Adjusting Travel Plans

If traveling to visit loved ones during the holidays, you can still do so with some preparation and realistic expectations.

  • Maintain Routine: Keep your loved one’s daily routine in mind when making travel plans.
  • Direct Routes: Plan for the most direct travel route, minimizing layovers if possible, and keeping travel to four hours or less.
  • Identification: Ensure your loved one wears an identification bracelet with contact information in case of separation.
  • Time Buffer: Allow extra time during your travels to accommodate unexpected situations and minimize stress.

Closing Thoughts

The holiday season can be a joyous time for everyone, including your family member with dementia, especially if you plan ahead. Simplify your celebrations and set boundaries to minimize stress so you can create a pleasant holiday experience for all.

About Jackson Creek Senior Living
Located at 16601 Jackson Creek Parkway, Jackson Creek Senior Living is a Colorado-based retirement community offering independent and assisted living, memory support, respite care, and day retreat services for seniors aged 62-plus. The community is managed by WellAge Senior Living, a respected senior care management company.

Demand for online shopping and door-to-door delivery services has increased in recent years. This transformation in how many older adults shop prompted Jackson Creek Senior Living to open an onsite General Store offering residents quick and convenient access to everyday essentials. It has also created opportunities for residents to get involved at the community level and fill an important role.

Located in the main lobby near the concierge desk, the General Store is staffed by resident volunteers Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The store carries a variety of snacks, drinks, and household essentials like anti-bacterial wipes, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap, and batteries.

“The General Store is really nice to get things right here and not have to leave the community to go shopping if you only need one or two items,” said Ellen, a Jackson Creek resident.

The community is also partnering with local artists and offering greeting cards and other unique items in the store that make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. The idea to sell locally curated items came after a member of the leadership team struck up a conversation with Noelle Clapp at a local maker’s market. Clapp is a talented young artist from Peyton, CO, and her designs are featured on mugs, note cards, and stickers available for purchase at the General Store. Team members plan to connect with other local artists and periodically change the offerings to suit a variety of tastes.

The General Store isn’t the only thing creating a buzz these days. To quench their thirst after a busy shopping day, residents can stop by the new Bubbly Bash in the Bistro three days a week from 2-3 p.m. and enjoy a specialty drink prepared by the concierge team. Monday’s menu features frosty root beer floats, Wednesday is smoothie day, and Friday’s Happy Hour serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to jumpstart the weekend. Once the weather cools down, fall-themed drinks like warm apple cider and hot cocoa will be available.

The new General Store and Bubbly Bash drink stand are a welcome convenience and provide opportunities for residents to engage in community life and socialize. Resident volunteers in the General Store help provide an important service to others in the community and get to know their neighbors personally. The Bubbly Bash events naturally draw residents out of their apartments to gather and socialize with peers without having to venture far from home.

At Jackson Creek, residents are encouraged to participate in all aspects of daily life. Supporting resident-run clubs and organizations fosters community engagement, and residents become more than neighbors and form new friendships through shared interests. Listening to what the residents want, like the modern-day convenience of the General Store, and collaborating with them to provide it is one of the many reasons Jackson Creek is a fabulous place to retire.

MONUMENTJackson Creek Senior Living now offers a unique service that lets family members and caregivers take time off work to handle personal business and appointments, travel, or just relax knowing their family member or patient is safe and receiving daily support and attention.

“Rather than stay home alone, the Creekside Retreat allows seniors to participate in wellness programs, social activities, and opportunities for growth and learning alongside friends during the day in our beautiful, state-of-the-art community,“ said Adam Salser, executive director of Jackson Creek.

Creekside Retreat participants have access to a full array of exceptional amenities and supportive services, including chef-prepared meals; medication management; care programs led by specially trained dementia experts; life enrichment activities; spacious common areas; a salon; library; exercise and therapy spaces; serenity room; theater/chapel; courtyard, gazebos, gardens and more.
